Crown Currency Offers Rare Dutch and Dutch Colonial Notes Certified by PMG

Posted on 2/16/2024

More than 400 PMG-graded banknotes from the Netherlands and its former colonies are available in a February sale.

More than 400 banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in an auction focused on rarities from the Netherlands and its former colonies. Bidding is already underway for the Crown Currency Live Auction 26 Banknotes & Coins sale on February 28, 2024.

Among the top lots is a Netherlands, Nederlandsche Bank 1926-38 1,000 Gulden graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 362). This high-denomination note dates from a difficult time in Dutch history: the already-lackluster economy of the late 1920s gave way to the global Great Depression in the 1930s. PMG has graded 76 examples of Pick# 48, and this one is unsurpassed in the PMG Population Report.

The auction also features notes from Dutch colonies, the largest of which was the Netherlands Indies, known today as Indonesia. One highlight is a Netherlands Indies 1968 200 Gulden Specimen graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 81). The PMG Population Report includes 13 examples of Pick# 83s2, which were printed with a fictitious date of 1968, which ended up being well after Javasche Bank was nationalized by the newly independent Indonesian government in 1951 and renamed Bank Indonesia in 1953.
