Overloon ligt 3 kilometer ten westen van de A73,
tussen Nijmegen en Venlo, afslag 7 (Vierlingsbeek, Overloon). De toeristische bewegwijzering wijzen u vanaf het centrum van Overloon de weg naar het museum. | Description | The parkThe park occupies more than 14 hectares and is open to the general public during daytime hours. It offers peace and space, and the freedom to think about the efforts that had to be made for liberty.In 1944, the biggest tank battle in Dutch history took place here at Overloon, which is why a museum was established on this battlefield after the war. The tanks, guns and other vehicles that had been left behind were then brought together in this park. On the same soil where the infantry fought - man to man… The collection had been kept outdoors for many years when the decision was made to relocate it indoors. In so doing, the artefacts will be better preserved. Thus, future generations will also be able to see with their own eyes how the Battle for Overloon was fought. National War and Resistance MuseumWar belongs in the museum. That is the motto of the Dutch National War and Resistance Museum, which is one of the two theme museums in Oorlogsmuseum. In the National War and Resistance Museum, the history of the Second World War is presented. Here, you will see how it came to be that, in a period of five years, more than fifty million people lost their lives. But also how the oppressed population managed to cope with restrictions and shortages in a resourceful way. Attention is given to the resistance in those days, but also to the persecution. And finally, of course, to the liberation, with special attention to the Battle at Overloon.Marschall MuseumIn a space of more than 10,000 square metres there are more than 150 historical vehicles, vessels and aircraft, which provide an excellent overview of the military efforts during the Second World War. The museum is located on the site of the Battle of Overloon, a World War II tank and infantry battle between Allied and German forces that occurred in September and October 1944, in the aftermath of Operation Market Garden. Set in 14 hectares of woodland, it is one of two museums in an area now designated as Liberty Park. A feature of the museum is the large number of military vehicles and equipment on display, both German and Allied. For years these have been kept in the open air, but have recently been moved indoors in order to help preserve them. Many of the exhibited vehicles took part in the Battle of Overloon. In 2006 the collection was expanded with a large number of vehicles from a private collection. |

Wikipedia.nl: Het Oorlogsmuseum Overloon (tot 2013 Liberty Park) is een Nederlands historisch en educatief museum in de plaats Overloon dat zich vooral richt op de geschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederland. Het is in Nederland het grootste in zijn soort en bestaat uit een bosachtig park waarin twee voormalige musea, het Nationaal Oorlogs- en Verzetsmuseum en het Marshallmuseum (10.000 m2), gehuisvest zijn. Het werd opgericht op basis van de resten van de Slag om Overloon, zoals tanks en kanonnen. De collectie bevat als meest opvallende stukken o.m. een B-25 Mitchell bommenwerper, een werkende Sowjet T-34-tank en een Duitse radarinstallatie. Het museum toont verder wapens, zowel kanonnen als handvuurwapens, uniformen van zowel geallieerden als Wehrmacht en militaire gebruiksvoorwerpen, soms in nagebouwde scènes. Ook bezit het museum een documentatieafdeling, geopend voor het publiek. Op het geaccidenteerde buitenterrein ligt een bosbaan. . Er is ook een aparte expositie gewijd aan de Jodenvervolging in Nederland. GeschiedenisOp 25 mei 1946 werd het Nationaal Oorlogs- en Verzetsmuseum geopend door de Britse generaal Whistler (1898-1963), de bevelhebber over de 11e Britse Pantserdivisie en de 3e Britse Infanteriedivisie die Overloon hadden veroverd. Het museumpark werd in 1946 geopend als Nationaal Oorlogs- en Verzetsmuseum, vrijwel zonder gebouwen. In 2006 kwam daar de collectie van het Marshall Museum uit Zwijndrecht bij met meer dan 200 militaire voer-, vaar- en vliegtuigen, waarvoor onder de naam Liberty Park een apart museum werd ingericht. Daarmee stelt het museum zowel de Tweede Wereldoorlog als het verkrijgen en beschermen van de vrijheid centraal.Bijzondere eigenschappenOorlogsmuseum Overloon bezit een park van ongeveer 1000 bij 500 m, en is daarmee, gemeten naar grondoppervlakte, het grootste museum van Nederland. Ook bezit het museum de grootste collectie voertuigen uit de oorlog. Van de bijzondere objecten zijn te vermelden:* de Panther-tank; deze werd uitgeschakeld bij de Slag om Overloon, en de bemanning sneuvelde bij het verlaten ervan; de tank stond vervolgens ruim 50 jaar buiten maar is gerestaureerd en staat nu binnen * een T-34-tank uit de Sowjet-Unie, in rijdende staat; deze wordt regelmatig gebruikt bij demonstraties * een B-25 Mitchell bommenwerper, die nog onderdeel was van het Nederlandse 320 Dutch Squadron RAF. Dit vliegtuig nam eind 1944 deel aan bij de aanvallen op de Maasbruggen van Venlo en Roermond * een Renault FT-17 tank, de enige tank die Nederland in 1940 bezat, als proefmodel * een Sherman tank, de meest ingezette Amerikaanse tank uit WO2, * een Spitfire, het bekendste Britse jachtvliegtuig uit de oorlog * een Duitse Seehund minionderzeeër * Duitse radarinstallaties, die een grote rol speelden in de Nederlandse luchtoorlog die 5 jaar lang boven Nederland woedde en 20.000 doden kostte * een bosparcours, waar jaarlijks demonstratieritten gemaakt worden tijdens onder meer de evenementen Militracks en Santa Fe. Permanente expositieshet museum biedt naast de vaste verzameling ook vier vaste exposities.
