About The Artwork

This is one of the 100 Goddesses series created in 2022 for a solo show. Painted in egg tempera with pigments, earth materials and gold decorative powder, Sheela Na Gig is a guardian of sacred places. Seen mostly across Ireland as well as parts of Europe this figure was placed on churches and other important sites in medieval times. Origins are not well understood but she is thought to be protective. The paintings are on handmade rough textured paper and are A3 size. They look great in gold frames or can be placed freely on the wall, or in box frames they also look good.

Sarah Dixon is an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary artist based in the UK. She started to create art when she was a teenager and has studied in many genres with a particular interest in Cypriot icon painting and Renaissance painting methods. Sarah is currently undertaking a master’s degree "Performance: Society" at Central Saint Martin's, University of the Arts London. Currently she has her studio in a small town on the edge of the Cotsowlds, where she is entering into a dialogue with land Goddesses and Earth through painting. Her works are strongly influenced by intersectional feminism, her upbringing in Cyprus and travelling a great deal; her Irish ancestry, her neurodivergent brain, and her degree in Biology (UCL). She worked in Amazonian rainforest as an ethnobotanist and researcher following these studies, living with the Shiwiar people in Ecuador which has also influenced her world view and understanding of the rigourous power of intutive practices. She has a rich multi disciplinary practice drawing upon a wide ragne of cultural influences, and has won awards in photography, animation and moving image. She is co-founder of the Women's Art Activation System, a collaboration to create feminist socially engaged work that probes institutional power structures and seeks new ways of relating within and to them. The WAAS also activates women's art and often creates work around mothering, reproduction and care. An artowrk of the WAAS, a collective "Baby Makers - Mother Bunting" has been accessioned into Stroud's Museum in the Park as part of their newly evolving maternities history collection. In 2022 she created 100 Goddesses in egg tempera on paper for a solo show, described by visitors as "better than the British Museum" (which also held a Goddess exhibition that year), which some might say is not a high bar to reach, depending on how you look at that instituion and what it represents. Sarah is a strong believer in the idea of equity, inclusion and flattened hierarchies, as may be seen in matriarchal societies. She is involved in supporting anti-racism and ecological & indigenous projects locally and globally. She supports the FiveXMore campaign on Black maternal health and is a co-Director of the Stroud Goddess Temple. Sarah works as a coach and consultant for cultural shifts and creative thinking, alongside her art practice.
