Kylie Minogue’s comeback: summer anthem ‘Padam Padam’ and her new Las Vegas residency put her back in the spotlight – but remember when Kylie Jenner tried to trademark their shared first name?

As the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time, having sold over 80 million records worldwide, Kylie Minogue is a force to be reckoned with. But it hasn’t always been a smooth ride for the 55-year-old songstress. Over the years, Minogue has had her fair share of struggles, from failed relationships and album flops to a breast cancer battle in her mid-30s that played out in front of the world.

Fortunately, the Aussie pop princess managed to not only bounce back, but also thrive in terms of health, wealth and career.

Kylie Minogue’s musical comeback

Minogue released her debut album Kylie back in 1988, and has seen varying success in the music charts over the years. While her popularity seemed to flatline towards the late 90s, it was 2000’s Light Years and 2001’s Fever that revived her career thanks to hits like “On a Night Like This” and “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”. And while she’s certainly done pretty well for herself since then, it was her 16th studio album, 2023’s Tension, that skyrocketed the singer back into the charts and gave her the unexpected international comeback that nobody saw coming.

Her latest hit single “Padam Padam” not only charted globally, but also became her first UK top 10 hit since 2010. The song also charted on America’s Billboard dance/electronic song chart – a first for Minogue in a territory she’s long struggled to crack. So it comes as no surprise that “Padam Padam” has made it onto lists of songs of summer 2023 – certainly an accomplishment for somebody so far down the line in their career.

Vegas, baby!

What’s a legendary singer with 16 albums under her belt to do next? Score a Las Vegas residency, of course. This month, the Aussie pop icon became the first headliner of the new 1,000-seat Voltaire venue at The Venetian Resort on the famous Vegas strip. To date, she is scheduled to perform her show over 20 nights into May 2024.

“It feels like the right time,” Minogue told Music Week. “It’s something a bit different for me and it’s something different for Vegas.”

The bright lights of Vegas are a far cry from the success Minogue had in territories like the UK and Australia, so she is understandably nervous about the big commitment. “It has been overwhelming,” she continued in the Music Week interview. “My ticket anxiety is real. I have a lot of shows where I have ticket anxiety and particularly this one. It’s such an intimate venue and I’m hoping people can get their tickets. But overall, it’s super-exciting.”

Homegirl at heart

In October 2021, Minogue made headlines when she revealed plans to move back to her native Australia after 30 years spent living in the UK. “I wanted to spend more time with my family,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald in February 2022. “Work will still take me back to Europe and the US, but knowing Australia is my base again is really lovely.”

The move sadly spelled the end of her five-year relationship with former British GQ creative director Paul Solomons though, who is based in London. The pair were even rumoured to have gotten engaged in February 2021. Although Minogue’s team denied the story, per Hello! magazine, Solomons’ stepmother Gloria said at the time: “She’s very nice. I’m thrilled they’re engaged. It’s very exciting.”

Will the real Kylie please stand up?

Following her meteoric rise to fame in the late 80s, Minogue was undoubtedly the most famous Kylie on the planet. That was until Kylie Jenner came along.

Jenner filed an application in 2014 to trademark the name Kylie for “advertising” and “endorsement services” – a move the Aussie singer successfully blocked following a three-year legal battle.

“It was just business, obviously. When I was named Kylie … I think I’ve met one person [other] than me called Kylie, so it’s kind of unusual,” she said.

“I’ve spent a lifetime protecting my brand and building my brand, so it was just something that had to be done,” the singer added.

A fortune well deserved

After more than 35 years in the entertainment industry, it’s no surprise that Minogue has accumulated an impressive fortune. This year, Celebrity Net Worth estimated her to be worth US$120 million. And with her Vegas residency just beginning, she’s sure to be adding a few more millions to her bank balance in the months ahead.
