A bald eagle soars over the waters of Union Bay recently, rewarding any bird watchers who happened to be on hand that day.

The Union Bay Natural Area is a prime Seattle bird-watching spot, with more than 200 species either living there or passing through, according to UW Botanic Gardens.

The once-endangered national symbol is a rather common sight in Western Washington, which has one of the biggest populations in the Lower 48 states, according to BirdWeb, an online guide maintained by Birds Connect Seattle. It goes on to say that several bald eagle pairs nest within the Seattle city limits.
