Biography

  • Ke$ha worked her way into the spotlight the hard way but now, having sold over 57 million records worldwide, her time has definitely come.

Born in California in 1987, Kesha Rose Sebert was raised by a single mother who was a successful singer-songwriter in her own right but struggled financially, torn between the demands of her craft and the need to support her family. When the family moved to Nashville, a young Kesha’s out-there persona did not sit well with the conservative surroundings however she used the time productively to work on her music and built her craft.

When she was just 17 she was persuaded to drop out of school and return to California to pursue music by songwriter and producer ‘Dr Luke’ who subsequently signed Kesha to his label and publishing company. Slowly, with Dr Luke's tutorage, Kesha began to write songs for artists and feature as a backing singer but still had to waitress on the side in order to live.

Her first breakthrough came when she sang backing on Flo Rida’s massive hit ‘Right Round’ but, determined to make it on her own terms, she declined featuring in the video or taking any credit for the performance. The appearance did however act as a catalyst for her signing a deal with RCA and finally being able to put the finishing touches to an album that she had already been working on for 6 years.

That album became ‘Animal’ which hit the top of the Billboard charts when it was released in January 2010 birthing the massive single ‘Tik Tok’. Having worked hard to get to that point, Ke$ha wasn’t going to stop there and the success continued with the release of her second album ‘Warrior. To begin with the dollar sign in Ke$ha’s name was an ironic nod to being broke but now everyone knows that it spells success.

Live reviews

  • Kesha

‘Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy’…. Whether you’re a fan or not, it is hard to deny that Ke$ha makes great pop songs. Catchy hooks and unforgettable lyrics in abundance, like or loathe the music she makes, her success speaks for itself and her first two albums achieved nine top 10 hits on the Billboard charts.

It is hard not to have fun at a Ke$ha show, if you do not mind getting covered in glitter that is. It rains glitter at Ke$ha gigs, quite literally. From the ceiling to the floor, everything is covered in the stuff- even Ke$ha’s ‘animals’ who make spontaneous appearances on the stage, throw buckets full of glitter into the audience.

I’ve seen Ke$ha live a number of times and watched her live show improve and evolve into the spectacle it is now. As she has achieved more success, the production effort put into her show has increased immensely, which means set changes, dazzling lighting displays, dancers and of course more glitter!

One of the best was at Brixton Academy. Hits like ‘Tik Tok”, “We R Who We R” and “Die Young” stirred the young audience in a glitter fuelled frenzy and the whole place buzzed with an energy that is rare to feel at live shows these days.

If fun, light-hearted pop music is your thing, you should definitely catch a Ke$ha show and even if it’s not, you’ll still find it pretty difficult not to enjoy yourself.

  • Ke$ha was one of the craziest, wildest and outlandish artists I have ever seen live. She rocked on to stage in suitably wacky style, with copious amounts of glitter. Indeed, glitter seemed to feature quite heavily throughout the night, culminating in glitter cannons at the end (which were, undeniably, awesome). Ke$ha puts on a fun show, and her music is catchy, fun and pop-tastic. The emphasis of the show was not necessarily to showcase great vocal talent, but more to put on a spectacle and to entertain. And I was certainly entertained. Ke$ha performed her greatest hits, such as ‘Your Love is My Drug’ and ‘Tik Tok’, which was played in the very middle of the show and which had the entire audience screaming along to the lyrics and dancing crazily. ‘Timber’ ended the show on a high, and had the entire crowd jumping up and down, causing a mild earthquake. The backing dancers were great and very entertaining: Ke$ha engaged with them throughout the show, going so far as to even give a couple of the male dancers a cheeky lap dance, in her suitably wacky fashion.

  • The one woman party that is Ke$ha really shows her fellow divas that they do not have overthink the live experience in order to still entertain fans. There is no sign of thoughtful video interludes or slick, week long choreographed routines during this lady's show but instead there is a huge emphasis on fun and a crazy amount of glitter.

Beginning behind some DJ decks with flashing glasses, she plays 'Sleazy' and 'Blow' in quick succession to get the crowds jumping and runs through her hits keeping the audience involved throughout. At one point she pulls a member out from the masses and offers them a lap dance before her backing dancer dressed as a giant penis teases him. It sounds as bizarre as it was, by the time Ke$ha is back on to the hits the energy levels are at an all time high. A brilliant finale of 'Your Love Is My Drug' and 'Tik Tok' accompanied by huge glitter cannons proves that female singers do not have to take themselves too seriously to conduct brilliant live shows.

  • Amazing. So f ing amazing. I loved it, even though the venue only had 1000 people in it, people were screaming, and I could feel the love. She sang all her classics hits, sang with her mom, had a guitar battle, sang the high note in Praying. Everything you could ever want in a concert. But one thing, the opening act was terrible. They were screaming, NOT singing. Legit, when we walked out, confetti was everywhere. That’s how you know it was a party!!!

  • Kesha has amazing stage presence and has the most confidence I've ever seen. Warning: she does swear a lot while she's talking but is very down to earth and makes a real connection to her fans. There was not a dry eye during praying. Didn't perform many songs but the speech before We R Who We R was the best thing I've ever heard.

  • Kesha was terrific. Only thing that was sad was she saved my favorite song- Tic Toc to the end and I had to leave and hear it in the parking lot. Many people seemed to want to hear it earlier in her set.
