BRANK, Gossip's Bridle in Lancaster Castle Old Postcard

Lancashire Vintage Postcard. The BRANK or Gossip's Bridle in Lancaster Castle. Instrument formerly used for the punishment of scolds and often called The Scold's Bridle or Gossip's Bridle. Women were put in the branks for such petty misdemeauors as using abusive insulting, or threatening language, swearing. With this upon her head the unfortunate woman was paraded through the streets by the bellman, beadle or constable, or was chained to the market cross, a target for ridicule and insult.
