In a new interview with Self, Kesha revealed that she was hospitalized and “almost died” in January after experiencing complications from freezing her eggs last year. She called the experience “horrifying.”

Though she didn’t share many details about the ordeal, the singer said that while performing in the Bahamas on New Year’s Eve, a few weeks after her procedure, she suddenly felt weak and unable to walk. She told Self that she was taken to a hospital in Miami where doctors said she had experienced an uncommon complication from freezing her eggs that they believe was partly caused by “her weakened immune system,” according to the story. In 2022, she was diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), a disease that makes people more prone to bacterial and viral infections of the upper airway, sinuses, and lungs, according to the National Institutes of Health. Kesha said that CVID led to “severe exhaustion, physically and mentally.”

“I finally feel recovered, but it took a couple months,” she said in the interview, adding that she is still figuring out how much to share about the experience and with whom: “I just was taking my reproductive health into my own hands. And I stand by everyone doing that.”
