The '90’s and 00’s have given us an endless supply of major trends, from chainmail and chokers to overalls and low-rise jeans, which have all come back into fashion—much to our horror and delight. The chainmail trend had garnered the approval of many A-listers as a party favourite.  Who can forget the iconic image of Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss famously stepping out in coordinated silver Versace mesh mini dresses, that's referenced decades after it made news?

In the early 2000’s, Paris Hilton, sported a slinky, shimmery chain-mail dress on her 21st birthday party. And over a decade later, Kendal Jenner wore a custom, silver number that referenced . Bella Hadid too served an iconic chainmail moment in a two-piece silver ensemble by Fannie Schiavoni, on her 20th birthday.

The cold, hard metal mesh has been reinterpreted, and has seen a resurgence on the spring and pre-fall 2022 runways from Versace- with crop tops and mini dresses in fun colours, to Ludovic de Saint Sernin with metallic minis in distressed mesh and a more toned down version at Etro with antique gold mesh-metal bras and dresses layered with other pieces.

From pairing a chainmail blouse with a lehenga for a wedding, like Khushi Kapoor or wearing it with a pair of jeans like Khloe Kardashian and Disha Patani—the metal-mesh trend is very versatile. For a more colourful approach, draw from Janhvi Kapoor who styled her chainmail crop top with a pair of hot pink pants or Dua Lipa who went out in a bright contrasting Versace look.
