The City of Worcester is converting all street parking meters to pay-by-plate and pay-by-phone kiosks, and upping parking rates from $1 per hour to $1.50, according to a Monday press release from the City.

The conversion from meters began Monday and will be completed Jan. 3, per the announcement.

The pay-by-plate system was first introduced into the Canal District in April to account for the increased traffic brought in from the Polar Park baseball stadium. Now, the City is adding 120 more pay stations throughout the rest of Worcester.

Parking turnover and enforcement has improved in the Canal District since the new system was implemented because it provides real time on-street parking data, according to the release.

The system is powered by the France-based software platform Flowbird Group and Auburn-based Wescor Parking Controls, Inc. Individuals can download the Passport app to utilize the pay-by-phone function.
