Not Anyone, 28 May 2024I use the Redmi Note 12 4G for 1 year and i updated it to H... moreWhich RAM version do you have? I did hear that HyperOS is best for phones with 8GB RAM, and that any bugs and lag will improve over time with updates and as your phone adjusts to the new operating system. I don't think that is the case for phones with 4GB RAM.

My advice to all users is that if you are enjoying the current MIUI, don't risk its performance just for frivolous features, like Magazine wallpapers and photo Cutouts. As I said, the new wallpaper is not even available to all phones with HyperOS. There are plenty of wallpaper options in the Themes app anyway. Remember, you can update to a new OS anytime, but you cannot reverse it, not without installing an unofficial custom ROM that invalidates your manufacturer's guarantee. You can try rolling it back by unlocking bootloader, but I haven't seen anyone attempt this on HyperOS yet, and it will cause data loss. And a factory reset will not bring back the previous OS.

To those who enjoy MIUI and those who newly purchased this device, here's how you can improve your experience, remove ads from system apps, and prevent your phone from updating to HyperOS (without root):

    1. When setting up your new phone, under Settings, turn off Automatic System Updates and Personalised Ads.

    2. Disable Updater and MIUI System Ads (msa) in Authorisation & Revocation. Optional: Disable MIUI Daemon (tracker) and System Apps Updater or disable Auto Updates in System Apps Updater. Enable Developer Options and turn off Automatic System Updates. Click on Reset to Default Values several times and turn off MIUI Optimisation to increase RAM usage.

    3. Turn off Recommendations under About in File Manager Settings, and turn off Show Ads and Personalised Recommendations in Themes Settings. Optional: Apply a private DNS provider host name, such as dns[dot]adguard[dot]com. Note that this may prevent ads you do want and may affect internet connectivity.

    4. Uninstall all preinstalled non-system apps you don't use. Optional: Download a third-party app like Activity Launcher, to create shortcuts for hidden system features, like Dual Apps and Second Space (may cause data loss).

    5. Apply App Lock to Updater, Gallery, File Manager etc, and hide your Settings and Security icons in a folder or app tray to prevent yourself from making accidental changes to your phone.

    6. Enjoy your phone! Download your favourite apps and sync all your devices. Organise your home screen with widgets and folders. Personalise your display, sound, keyboard, always-on and lockscreen, floating windows, drop down menu, wallpaper, battery saver, default search engine and browser, and notifications etc. Close your windows often, delete unimportant files and unused apps, make sure your apps are updated when necessary, set up cloud storage, back-up, and Find Device. Add a microSD card, anti-virus if needed, and reboot your phone now and then.

Search online to find out how to do these. Unlike installing an OS update, all of these changes can be undone very easily.

I use the Redmi Note 12 4G for 1 year and i updated it to HyperOS and no issues to my phone. And i think it just good and more customization for the wallpapers is good .I think that the minus for HyperOS In Redmi Note 12 4G is ,it doesnt the same with my mom's Xiaomi 13T . Like the animation, Blurred control panels etc. (HyperOS Indonesia).

*Sorry my english is kinda bad*

Prolog, 27 May 2024What's with the WiFi / Mobile Data Network connectivit... moreHave you ruled out the possibility that it could be a modem router/ISP issue? If both the Wi-Fi and Data switch off at the same time, then it's probably an issue with the device. I hope this isn't the result of not updating the OS. If it is, then I believe this is planned obsolescence by Xiaomi Inc.

I actually have a theory (a bit of a conspiracy theory, I must admit) that Xiaomi realised we budget phone customers have it too good, and they're running out of ideas for new, innovative features. So I think Xiaomi created HyperOS to take MIUI features away, release them again in the future, and make certain features available only to mid-range and flagship phone customers, thus pushing customers to buy their more expensive models. This is evident in the new Depth Effect/Magazine lockscreen they boasted about, which is not available on budget phones. The performance of HyperOS is also slower and heavier on lower RAM phones, but they designed it on the iPhone to give it a "premium" illusion. This leads me on to the other CONS I've since discovered...

          - I've seen a review by a tech YouTuber where he expressed his disappointment that this phone doesn't have Dual Apps (a Xiaomi feature that duplicates an app to run separately on one device) and Second Space (a Xiaomi feature that creates another phone interface on one device). I discovered that these features are actually HIDDEN from view under "Security Core Component".
The only way I was able to access these features was by installing a third party app from Google Play Store which uncovers these features and creates an icon for them, such as Activity Launcher. The downsides to this are 1) it's hidden, 2) it's a security risk, 3) it can cause data loss, and 4) I hear it could root your phone, making other apps unusable and invalidating your guarantee/insurance.
I have clicked on Dual Apps, and it did load, but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say whether or not it works on this phone. I will try it in the future as I'd like to have a second Whatsapp for my dual SIM. I don't need Second Space, so I haven't clicked on it, but I can see its uses, for example; letting someone borrow your phone without worrying about your privacy, preventing thieves from accessing your information, separating work life and private life, etc.

          - I've mentioned previously about enabling a Private DNS, such as Adguard, to block ads from system apps, like File Manager. If you do this, you will not be able to request video ads, for example, in games. So if you want to get a free item in a game, you may want to disable the Private DNS.

To balance out the cons, I'll add a PRO I've since discovered:
          - App Lock allows a user to add an extra layer of protection by keeping an app behind a pattern and fingerprint lock. As far I can see, you'll only need to enter your passcode once per log-in. This feature is not available for all apps, however, in particular the system apps. I use this for my banking app, my phone payment apps, and my main email app. I might use this for my messaging apps too.

I'll update you all on any more pros and cons I discover. My locations on this site are listed as HKx and pKf (I'm not signed up). In the meantime, tell me your opinion about my theory. And if anyone wants me to collate all the things I did to improve my experience of this phone with MIUI, let me know.

          ~"Rook" from London :)

What's with the WiFi / Mobile Data Network connectivity? When I enable them from drop down menu, sometimes they work and sometimes not; I have to manually enable them but turning off and on again - from 3g go LTE, etc. Anyone facing this issue?

Evidence, 21 May 2024Hi, how much did you spend to get this phone. A friend of m... moreI mentioned the price at the bottom of my review. I originally spent £123 for a brand new phone (which would be classed as a budget phone in the UK), but I did get a price difference refund when the price dropped. Amazon UK is currently selling it for £120 (with free delivery) on the same listing. I do suggest you read my comments in full to prevent yourself making the same mistakes I did.

Other minor CONS I've since discovered: There's no separate volume control for system apps and notifications. The default keyboard is Gboard and its clipboard only saves copied items for one hour if they are not pinned. However, I think both of these issues could perhaps be fixed using other apps.

Prolog, 07 May 202410000000% agreed. Enjoying my Redmi Note 12 without HyperOS... moreI received my brand new Redmi Note 12 4G replacement this afternoon (thanks to Amazon) and spent several hours in the evening setting everything up, changing the settings, and downloading all the apps I had one by one (by looking at photos of the previous phone's screen ...because Google's backup system like Google One is rubbish). The difference is like night and day!

I didn't immediately update the MIUI like I did last time, and I realised today that the MIUI that came with the phone (Global 14.0.4) is so much better than the latest one. The number of Always-on display options are particularly cool. I made sure to disable automatic updates, as well as toggle off the Updater and System apps updater in the Authorisation and revocation. My phone feels quite expensive now, and it seems to have more free space than it did before.

I think the people who are enjoying HyperOS has the 8GB RAM version of this phone, and mostly care about speed as they play a lot of games. I'm a 30-something year old woman and I don't particularly care about gaming. Again, I repeat to others who are thinking about buying this phone, just bought this phone, or haven't updated it, NEVER UPDATE IT TO HYPEROS. Complain to Xiaomi about how bad HyperOS is instead! I already did!

Review: The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 4G 4/128 has almost all the features a casual user would need. Some of these features are even unavailable on flagship phones and more expensive, newer models in the Redmi Note range. For example:
                          PROs:
                          - Two SIM card slots and a separate micro SD card slot (up to 1TB). I bought a microSDXC card to store photos, videos and important documents and recordings in it for quick removal, just in case the phone malfunctions.
                          - A 3.5mm jack. Wired earphones are more secure than wireless. And unlike USB earphones, you can charge your phone whilst using your 3.5mm earphones.
                          - FM Radio. The 3.5mm earphones double as a radio aerial. This is handy if you enjoy listening to the news or chart music without internet connection.
                          - An infrared blaster. Using an app and the right configurations, you can control other electronics that use a remote, including many older electronics. I'm able to control my Sky+ box and my 12-year-old Panasonic television, which is useful for when the TV remote breaks or goes missing.
                          - Gyroscope and compass sensors. Most budget smartphones only have the accelerometer and proximity sensors. And like most phones nowadays, this phone has GPS and enough storage space to download multiple offline maps.
                          - Pro-camera controls. You can manually control exposure, saturation, focus etc when taking photos. The photos look particularly clear on the AMOLED screen.
                          - The UK version of this phone (23021RAA2Y) has NFC. This is needed for most contactless mobile payments and NFC tags.
                          - Strengthened glass (with a screen protector) and water-resistance. To give clumsy people peace of mind. I bought a wallet case for extra protection.
                          - A soft transparent phone cover, a tiny tray ejector pin, a compact fast UK charger and USB-A to C cable. The phone charges up very quickly and the battery lasts all day (with two battery-saving modes).

However, there are several drawbacks to this phone. If it weren't for these, this phone would've otherwise been perfect for me:
                          CONS:
                          - HyperOS. The HyperOS system update slowed down the phone and stripped it off its personality. It took away some of the features, replaced other features with worse versions, and oversimplified the graphics (e.g. charging, about phone, wallpapers etc). The update makes the phone feel like a cheap iPhone knock-off.
                          - No Augmented Reality. The Google ARCore app, which is needed to play certain games in AR mode (such as Pokemon Go) does not support this phone, despite supporting older devices. I think this is more Google's fault, and I hope they fix this soon. Many people are being denied an entire experience.
                          - Too many ads and bloatware. I was surprised to see intrusive ads on system apps, such as Themes and Fonts. I spent some time uninstalling unwanted apps and learning how to block some of the ads (disable msa and recommendations, private DNS, etc). I still saw ads however.
                          - Complicated navigation and easy deletion. I'm still trying to find out how to delete the phone's cached data without deleting the apps' cache and data, if there is a way. I'm worried that I might accidentally delete my photos and messages via the Security and Cleaner apps.
                          - No 8GB RAM/256 ROM UK version available. I'm disappointed to see that customers in other countries can buy the 8GB RAM model at the same price as the UK version. That being said, I haven't been hindered by the 4GB RAM yet and I am able to multitask so far. The phone's storage with the 1TB expandable storage is just enough space.
                          - The barcode sticker on the back of the phone leaves an unsightly dark square after peeling it off.
                          - Minor issues: No replaceable battery. Widgets take up more space than necessary. Would've preferred a zoom lens over a macro lens. AMOLED makes some dark pictures impossible to see. No preinstalled classic telephone ringtone and clock alarm. No 5G (I don't use data roaming, so not an issue for me). No colour options in the UK (I prefer the Onyx Grey anyway). Too many system updates. Xiaomi ends support for this phone in approximately 2026.

I paid ~£123 for it. Overall, I am satisfied so far. For power users and professionals, this would be a decent backup phone. Unfortunately, I had to return it because of the HyperOS system update. I contacted Xiaomi customer support, and they said I could try a factory reset, but the phone did not revert back to MIUI 14. If you're considering buying this phone, do NOT update to HyperOS. HyperOS is a downgrade. I have purchased another new phone from the same seller, but I will not be "updating" it. I prefer a good user experience over better security.

I did not like the charging visuals, the About Phone visuals, the wallpapers, and the drop-down menu. Everything also felt slower than MIUI 14. I reordered this phone today and will not be updating the system. It's trying too hard to be an Apple iPhone and I hate Apple iPhone. The oversimplification of the userface is making the phone feel cheaper than it already is.

That's why I will soon buy honor or OnePlus phone or anything but no more Xiaomi ever...! My first and ever last Xiaomi was this note 12 4g. Disappointed fully.

Been using for 6 months without HyperOS update and still going strong. However the phone has a lot of bugs lately; it went pitch black screen/off after talking for around an hour with my friend. So I did some research and found out about the "hard reset" thingy; by pressing the volume and power button simultaneously. Battery timing is okay-ish and SOT depends on usage. I'm from a third world country, so I can't sue them. Only if a person reading this from USA, Canada, or UK, having this handset. Please file a high-profile lawsuit against Xiaomi for at least $2 billion - on behalf of the entire Xiaomi/Redmi user base worldwide.
