The Rarest Ferrari 360 Modena Has a Pop-Out Sunroof
We're into strange automotive features here at Road & Track. Recently, we told you about the little-known hatchback rear window on the last-gen Porsche 911 Targa. Now, we've come across something similarly odd, this time on a Ferrari 360 Modena-a pop-out sunroof.
If you've never seen a Ferrari 360 with a sunroof before, we're not surprised. According to auction house RM Sotheby's, which sold a 360 so equipped earlier this year, it's believed that just 25 examples were built, and only 12 came to the US. It's no normal 2000s-era sunroof either. Instead, it's a hexagonal pop-out that's stored behind the driver. So in addition to being super-rare, it's also pretty strange.
When the 360 was new, buyers weren't very receptive of this sunroof. One buyer on the FerrariChat forums even said their dealer cautioned them against checking that option box. Of course, because so few sunroof-equipped 360s were built, it's now becoming somewhat desirable among collectors. That one that RM Sotheby's sold last year? It was also optioned with a six-speed manual, and sold for over $137,000.
I found two sunroof-equipped 360s currently for sale in the US; a 35,000-mile example on eBay with an F1 paddle-shift transmission for $66,995, and another on Autotrader with a six-speed manual and 27,000 miles on its odometer for $108,000. So, while the sunroof might've been a rare option, it doesn't seem to sway the price as much as a manual transmission does. We'd give it another few years before people start fawning over sunroof 360s, driving their prices higher.
