PUBG streamer infiltrates the team that wiped his out, and kills them all

Red shirts always die. Didn’t these guys watch Star Trek?

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Perhaps you’ve seen this, but it’s new to me, and it is outstanding. A Chinese team of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds enthusiasts wear red shirts to help themselves coordinate in groups larger than four. Unfortunately for them, such a simple piece of clothing makes their gang easy to infiltrate. And kill. All at once.

The hilarity was captured over the weekend by this South Korean streamer. There are subtitles to help you follow the action, but the gales of laughter at the end are a universal language.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, of course, limits teams to four members. Some try to work around this and team up in larger numbers by queueing up at the same time to get into the same match. If they do, they still need a way to find each other. The red shirt idea is a good one, but it’s easily mimicked by miscreants. Plus, haven’t these guys seen Star Trek? Guys in red shirts are supposed to die.

The streamer in question was the lone survivor of a team wiped out by the Chinese mega-team. Finding a hiding space, he whips out a red shirt and pals around with his new buddies, waiting to take revenge.

There are a couple of very nervous car rides where it seems like they’ve figured out he’s the mole. Instead, he manages to avoid suspicion (and shut off his mike so his laughing friends don’t give him away) and get back to a safehouse with all of them in one room.

It’s no spoiler to say that everyone dies, but the method (and the rhetorical flourish before it is delivered) puts me in the floor each time. If people want to know why PUBG is so popular, well, encounters like this are proof enough.

The next level of puzzles.
