The eggs of this species are laid on the leaves of oak (Quercus). When hatched, the larva at first mines the leaves in a gallery leading to a blotch.
Wingspan 10 to13 mm. Very similar to the related Caloptilia alchimiella, differing in several subtle ways including the yellow blotch on the forewing.
Very similar to C. alchimiella, shorter and less clearly defined yellow blotch on the forewing. Only reliably separated by dissection.
This species has recently been separated from a very similar moth, Caloptilia robustella, and accurate identification of the adult moth is problematic.
Narrow gallery leading to a squarish or triangular blotch. Then forms up to three successive cones by folding the lobe of a leaf downwards.
The adults are difficult to distinguish from the recently separated C. robustella, so care must be taken. The flight period is from May to July, and the moths ...
Moreover a temporal overlap exists between the single larval generation of C. alchmiella, and the second larval generation of robustella. Only the pupae and ...
This map shows all records of Caloptilia alchimiella/robustella in the Durham (VC66) database per monad (1km grid square). The map can be explored further by ...
May 30, 2024 · Forewings reddish brown with a conspicuous yellow triangular spot at the middle of the costa. This spot is not prolonged towards the apex.
Both Caloptilia alchimiella and robustella cannot be reliably determined in the field. They can only safely be separated by dissection of the genitalia.
