Basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are agaricoid with whitish spores, typically with scaly caps and a ring on the stipe. Around 400 species of Lepiota are currently recognized worldwide. Many species are poisonous, some lethally so.

Some sites suggest that shaggy parasols are a dead ringer (to a novice) for shaggy mane, (Lepiota americana), and parasol (Macrolepiota procera), both of which are edible and have white spore prints. But deadly dapperlings also look similar and have white spore prints but are seriously toxic.
