Basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are agaricoid with whitish spores, typically with scaly caps and a ring on the stipe. Around 400 species of Lepiota are currently recognized worldwide. Many species are poisonous, some lethally so.

Some sites suggest that shaggy parasols are a dead ringer (to a novice) for shaggy mane, (Lepiota americana), and parasol (Macrolepiota procera), both of which are edible and have white spore prints. But deadly dapperlings also look similar and have white spore prints but are seriously toxic.

Edibility unknown; too small and unsubstantial to have culinary value; some Lepiotas (s.l.) are known to contain the same toxins as in the death cap (Amanita phalloides). Lepiota rubrotinctoides is one of the first mushrooms to appear in our woodlands after the start of the fall rains.

Lepiota subincarnata, commonly known as the fatal dapperling and deadly parasol, is a gilled mushroom of the genus Lepiota in the order Agaricales. It is known to contain amatoxins and consuming this fungus can be potentially lethal.
