ADSL Speed Calculations

The speeds that you can expect from your ADSL service are governed by many factors, including;

  • Type of telephone cabling in street
  • Distance from telephone exchange
  • Cabling at your home
  • Equipment at your end - modem, filter, surgeboards etc
  • & many more things

However we can work out a reasonable estimate of the speeds that you can expect by getting some data from your modem.

The Information we need is

  • Line Attenuation
  • & Noise Margin

In a Netcomm NB6 this information is found under Status & then DSL Line
Your Modem should give you this information somewhere - check the userguide if you can't find it.

The graph below gives you an approximate idea of the speeds you can expect, given the Line Attenuation information.
