I’m not a big griller, but I do love grilled food. I have empathy for an overworked grill. See above cartoon. I have done other grill cartoons, the two below were in The New Yorker a while ago.
.
It seems I may have a grill obsession. Or, I enjoy it when others have obsessions, they are good fodder for a cartoon. And grilling typically is a “guy” thing, and I find it rather fun to tease guys.
One of my favorite cartoons by one of my favorite New Yorker cartoonists, Jack Ziegler, is about a man and his grilling. It’s also the title of one of his collections, Hamburger Madness, that I discovered before I knew him. It’s how I really became familiar with his work. Jack was a wonderful person and cartoonist, who died too young several years ago. He was a generation older than me, and his oddball sense of humor of his cartoons influenced me, although it may not be visible. I would study that collection and think to myself, you can do THAT? Jack’s work opened up all kinds of creative possibilities.
I miss Jack, he was like an older brother to me, and I so loved his quirky sense of humor. His cartoons and books survive, and I am very grateful. Go look at his work! You will be glad you did.
Leave it to men to take an elementary cooking technique (5 minutes, then flip) and claim that it’s an art form.
"... but I haven't uncovered them yet." Brilliant!
