A total of 600 sq. km of Kherson Oblast has flooded, with 32% on the right bank and 68% on the left bank of the Dnipro River.

Despite the extreme danger and Russian shelling, the evacuation of the population from the flooded area continues, Prokudin stressed.

In total, 1,999 civilians have left the danger area as of 6 a.m., with 1,495 evacuated from Kherson city’s Korabel neighborhood alone.

About 55,000 hectares of forests have been flooded, mainly in the occupied territories, said Ukrainian State Forest Resources Agency head, Yuriy Bolokhovets.

He emphasized that animals are actually doomed there.

Mykolaiv’s city’s water level rose by almost a meter, said local mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych.

The coastline near residential buildings is being fortified in some of the lowest areas, the official added.

Over 850 kg of fish have already died in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast because of the rapid shallowing of the water reservoir caused by the Russian action, Dnipropetrovsk regional governor, Serhiy Lysak, reported on Telegram.

The intensity of Russian shelling of Kherson Oblast has decreased since the Russian army in southern Ukraine has had to withdraw its units by up to 15 km due to the water spillage, Natalia Humeniuk, South Operational Command spokesperson, said on Ukrainian national television on June 8. She stressed that it was the withdrawal of Russian units that made it difficult for the invaders to work with mortar calculations.

The Russians were unprepared for the consequences of their destruction of the Kakhovka dam, Ukraine’s General Staff said in a morning update on Facebook early on June 8.

The enemy is already suffering losses in manpower, weapons, and military equipment, Ukraine’s military says. Injured, killed, and missing have been reported in the 7th airborne assault division and the 22nd army corps of Russia’s Armed Forces.

Mykolayiv Oblast’s Kinburn Spit has been cut off from the mainland by water, the Southern Forestry Office reported on Facebook.

The road connecting the peninsula with the mainland is completely flooded near the village of Heroiske. It is no longer possible to reach the mainland from the Kinburn Spit by land transport, the agency stressed.

Amid the tragedy in southern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Kherson Oblast to hold a coordination meeting on dealing with the consequences of the Kakhovka dam explosion.

“Many important issues were discussed,” he wrote on Telegram.

“The operational situation in the region as a result of the disaster, evacuation of the population from potential flood zones, elimination of the emergency caused by the dam explosion, organization of life support for the flooded areas. Also, the prospects for restoring the region’s ecosystem and the operational military situation in the man-made disaster area.”
