Richard Neutra’s Taylor House Is Up for Rent in L.A. at $10,000 Per Month

Perched atop a nature preserve, the midcentury modern home comes complete with a floating-hearth fireplace, Japanese soaking tub and bucolic surroundings interwoven with curving live oak trees.

A little over three years after it sold at $1.7 million, for only the third time in its 60-plus-year history, a striking Richard Neutra-designed house in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale has just popped up on the market again. But this time the midcentury gem is being offered as a rental opportunity, asking a pricey $10,000 per month.

Originally built in the early 1960s for Maurice and Marceil Taylor—and aptly known as the “Taylor House”—the place has since undergone a meticulous three-year restoration at the hands of its current owner. Previously occupied by retired Walt Disney Imagineering executive John Solomon—who picked up the home from the Taylors back in ’97 for a mere $321,500 and put his own stamp on the premises during his tenure—the pillared and flat-roof structure has been described by a former listing agent as “one of the most uniquely original houses there is of Neutra’s.”

Tucked away on a steep dead-end street that winds its way into the northeast border of the Verdugo Mountains Open Space Preserve—within the Whiting Woods neighborhood, which also holds architect John Lautner’s famed Schaffer House—the single-story residence features two bedrooms and a matching number of baths in almost 1,500 square feet of open-concept living space adorned throughout with cork floors, built-in mahogany cabinetry and large expanses of glass providing a seamless connection to nature.

Highlights include a particularly eye-catching red front door, which opens into an entry flanked by a burlap-clad art wall before flowing to a light-filled living room centered around a massive brick and plaster fireplace sporting a floating hearth. There’s also a dining room, plus a kitchen outfitted with refurbished Frigidaire appliances and an accompanying breakfast nook.

A master retreat cloistered in the southeast corner of the home boasts a dressing area and bath spotlighted by a sunken tub; and elsewhere is a laundry area, as well as HVAC and security systems. Adding extra panache? Woodsy half-acre grounds laced with live oak trees, and hosting a patio ideal for al fresco lounging and entertaining, an open-air shower and an attached carport for two vehicles.

The listing is held by Shane McCoy Fermelia and Hilary Markus of Carolwood Estates.
