The 2015 Ford Mustang opened the New York Auto Show with a vertigo-inducing debut, more than 1,000 feet above New York City.
If you’re going to make it big in New York, you’ve got to know how to make a splashy entrance.
Ford Motor Company did just that today, April 16, with a high altitude introduction of the 2015 Ford Mustang.
Perched on the 86th floor observation deck of the iconic Empire State Building, the bright-yellow convertible was in GT trim. That means there’s a rumbling 5.0-liter V-8 engine lurking under the hood, and loads of tire-smoking performance once you punch the gas pedal.
The car’s dramatic setting required an entire night to take apart this brand new Mustang, haul it 80 floors skyward, and carefully reassemble it in time for the morning preview.
Introduced late last year, ahead of the Detroit Auto Show, this marks the official New York debut of the all-new 2015 Mustang. This is also the 50th anniversary of the Mustang’s introduction which, as you might have guessed, also took place right here in New York City.
Later today, at the Jacob Javits Center, Ford will unveil a special limited edition 50th anniversary Mustang.
That’s just the beginning of Ford’s celebrations, however. Tomorrow, April 17, roughly 100 Mustangs will gather in Queens, at the site of the 1964 World’s Fair, where the original “pony car” was first introduced.
Bill Ford Jr., executive chairman of the Ford Motor Company, was present for a quick photo op alongside the Mustang. Despite donning a pair of swanky sunglasses, and the Mustang’s summer-loving specification, the unseasonably frigid temperatures meant time at the top of the Empire State was kept relatively short.
The New York Auto Show media preview begins today, while the show officially opens its doors to the public on Friday, April 18.
