Ferdinand VII

King of Spain Ferdinand VII

Profession: King of Spain

Nationality:
Spain
Spanish

Biography: Ferdinand VII was a King of Spain that reigned twice, first in 1808 and then again from 1813 until 1833, at which point he died. He was known variously by his supporters and detractors as either 'el Deseado' (the Desired) or 'el Rey Felón' (the Felon King).

While Ferdinand VII was heir apparent, and briefly took the throne in 1808, he was overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte that same year. This resulted in an interregnum of several years, until in 1813 the monarchy was established once more and Ferdinand took the throne.

Attitudes towards the rule of Ferdinand VII are varied, with the years seeing the loss of Spain's American colonies. The fact that Spain also descended into civil war immediately after his death also reflects poorly on Ferdinand.

Born: October 14, 1784
Birthplace: El Escorial, Spain
Star Sign: Libra

Died: September 29, 1833 (aged 48)
