Kesha's ‘Praying’ is a powerful comeback ballad about finding peace after Dr. Luke turmoil

Kesha is all grown up and sending a powerful message in her new single Praying.

On Thursday, the singer released her first single in almost four years, a comeback ballad for the artist who has been under the radar while dealing with the dismissal of her sexual assault case against producer Dr. Luke , an eating disorder, anxiety and depression.

In a  letter written on Lenny Letter, Kesha opened up about the experiences and how they've helped her create the song.

“I have channeled my feelings of severe hopelessness and depression, I've overcome obstacles, and I have found strength in myself even when it felt out of reach,” she writes.

She knows she’s not alone in the battles she faces, she says, dedicating this song to those who are also facing challenges.

“I hope this song reaches people who are in the midst of struggles, to let them know that no matter how bad it seems now, you can get through it,” she wrote.

The song, which is prefaced in the music video with a desperate-sounding monologue in Kesha’s voice, is smooth and soulful. Full of lyrics that allude to  the her sexual assault allegations she's leveled against Luke, which he's consistently denied, her vocals gradually gain strength throughout the song, turning the mood from darkness and despair to hope and confidence.

She wasn’t alone in transforming her emotions into the powerful ballad, getting help from Ryan Lewis and Ben Abraham for the song as well as Jonas Åkerlund for the video.

The singer also touched upon her spirituality in the letter, explaining how she turned to “something greater” to help bring her peace,another theme of the song.

"This song is about me finding peace in the fact that I can't control everything,” she explained. “Because trying to control everyone was killing me.”

Kesha’s new album Rainbow is set for release on Aug. 11.
