Shoppers out in the sunshine at the (de) Lijnbaan, Rotterdam, the Netherlands c. 1960. The Lijnbaan is the main shopping precinct of Rotterdam. It was opened in 1953, as the main pedestrian street in the new shopping district, after the old area was completely destroyed during World War II by German bombing. It was designed by architects Jo van den Broek and Jacob B (Jaap) Bakema. It was the first purpose-built pedestrian street in Europe. The car-free area proved successful and has influenced numerous similar schemes around the world – a vintage 1950s/1960s photograph.
