In 1930-31, Viareggio needed a mascot befitting it's annual carnival. A competition was held and Uberto Bonetti created the winning design, basing the clown's colour scheme on the red-and-white umbrellas that dot the beach at Viareggio. The clown was given the name of Burlamacco, referencing the Burlamacca canal that traverses the city. The Statue of Burlamacco is now a permanent feature on the waterfront.
